Academic Affairs: Africana Studies Managing Director

Berklee College of music is seeking a dynamic educator and leader to serve as the Managing Director, Center for Africana Studies.

Reporting to the Dean of Professional Education Division, the Managing Director will serve as the administrative and creative leader of Africana Studies initiatives, programming, partnerships, fundraising, and instruction. In addition to their work within the Center, they will be a crucial asset to the wider Berklee community assessing trends and reviewing programming to promote the broader aspirations of equitable representation in curricula. This is a 12-month administrative position with a renewable contract.

The ideal candidate for this role will be an active scholar, artist, innovator, and educator with a strong commitment to higher education and innovation in pedagogy. They will be an action-oriented visionary able to articulate and develop goals and implement strategy. They will expand on and develop new Africana Studies programming and curricula based on student needs/ interests, and collaborative work with the wider community. They will be an excellent communicator with experience with fundraising and multi-media programming. They will be community-minded, with a desire to work with the Boston community, and ties to the communities of Black music scholarship in America and abroad. The Managing Director must be committed to providing the highest and most- inclusive educational experience to all students.


  • Develop and expand the Africana Studies area through curriculum development, the hiring of faculty and programming including the development and maintenance of undergraduate and graduate course offerings and degrees.
  • Collaborate pan-institutionally to offer engaging and informative programming, events, and initiatives.
  • Engage with Finance and Institutional Advancement to build fundraising opportunities for Africana Studies programming and initiatives.
  • Manage budget for Africana Studies
  • Teach a minimum of one Africana studies course during Spring and Fall semesters.
  • Maintain scholastic and creative presence in the Black/ Diasporic Studies community.
  • Serve as a thought leader as Berklee works to achieve its highest aspirations of inclusivity and pedagogical excellence.


  • Advanced degree in Africana Studies, Anthropology, Ethnomusicology, History, Music History, Sociology or related field within Black/ Diasporic studies or other appropriate specialization.
  • An excellent record of creative scholarship, artistic expression, and innovative ideas.
  • Evidence of administrative success in higher education or related field.
  • College or university level teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated professional engagement and ability to establish, maintain, and sustain relationships internally and externally.
  • Strong organizational skills with a command of technology and programming to support administrative tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to furthering the education of students.

Start Date:
The start date for the position is January 2021.
