Faculty Sound Faculty in the School of Film / Video

Position Status: Full Time Regular Faculty

The School of Film/Video at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), invites applications from emerging to midcareer sound/moving image artists/practitioners for a full-time faculty position in sound. CalArts and the School of Film/Video value the individuality of artists and welcome the addition of unique and inventive voices to our diverse, collaborative community. The School of Film/Video, one of six schools within CalArts, houses a diverse population of approximately 400 students at the BFA and MFA level. The well resourced sound area serves all four academic programs within the School of Film/Video (Character Animation, Program in Film and Video, Experimental Animation, and Film Directing Program) and supports all modes of film and video making. Film/Video Faculty are expected to have a diverse range of experience, including an in-depth practical knowledge of their specialties.

Sound faculty in the School of Film/Video bring an innovative approach to teaching sound for film/video and related media. Our teaching embodies a holistic view of the entire filmmaking process, specifically placing sound in an active relational role to all other aspects of filmmaking. The faculty member in this position will teach and help develop all aspects of sound design, production and post-production sound at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels. This includes guiding students through projects in fictional narrative, documentary, experimental film/video, and animation, as well as hybrid forms including performance and installation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses that encompass the conceptual and practical aspects of sound design, production and post-production sound
  • Mentoring of students on their artistic, practical, and academic progress specifically as it relates to sound
  • Designing course curricula with program faculty and other sound faculty
  • Attending faculty meetings
  • Sound mixing (with students) of many types of projects
  • Various other duties, as assigned by the Dean and area coordinators
  • Sound faculty must remain fluent with current sound practices and tools, including
  • Protools and Adobe Premiere.
  • Faculty must have a strong commitment to teaching, student achievement, and academic service. All CalArts faculty are expected to maintain an on-going creative and/or scholarly practice resulting in exhibitions, events, professional credits, or publications.

Requirements:

  • One year or more of teaching at the college level
  • MFA, or an equivalent international degree
  • Clearly evidenced history of professional work or exhibition record of creative work.
