Administrative Director of the Speaking and Listening Program and Center
Department: Speaking and Listening Center
Position Type: 5-year term
Review of Applications: Begin January 31, 2020 and continue until position filled
DePauw University invites applications for a 5-year term position as the Director of the Speaking and Listening Program and Center beginning in the 2020-2021 academic year. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience. Ph.D. preferred, ABD considered. The Speaking and Listening Center (the S Center) supports a well-established program of speaking and listening across the curriculum and provides academic support for both students and faculty in courses emphasizing speaking and listening competency. The director’s administrative duties (approximately 50% of the position) include recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating tutors and promoting S Center services. The director is responsible for faculty development workshops, providing instructional support, and working closely with the coordinator of English for Academic Purposes on speaking and listening pedagogy for international students, and with the directors of the Writing and Quantitative Reasoning centers, which together with the S Center are housed in the Academic Resource Center (https://www.depauw.edu/academics/academic-resources/academic-resource-center/).
A commitment to inclusive undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts setting is essential. S-related teaching duties include the practicum in oral communication and tutor training. Candidates will also teach 2 courses per year in their disciplinary specialty. Recently, this teaching has been done within the Communication and Theatre Department; however, we are open to housing some or all of the successful candidate’s teaching in other departments, subject to the candidate’s qualifications and departmental needs. A strong record of scholarly activity is preferred, as is experience directing speaking and listening programs/centers. Facility with technology that enhances the Center’s operation is desired, as is the ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students across disciplines and departments.
