Faculty Assistant Instructional Professor (The University of Chicago)
The Division of the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago invites applications for a position as Assistant Instructional Professor (AIP), with a specialization in Sociology, in the Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences (https://mapss.uchicago.edu). This is a full-time, career track teaching position. The initial two-year appointment will begin in Academic Year 2021-22 and is renewable with opportunity for promotion.
The AIP will annually teach four courses in MAPSS, including a section of the MAPSS core course “Perspectives in Social Science Analysis,” at least one graduate seminar on methods of research in sociology (or related areas), and at least one elective with broad appeal intended to introduce students to foundational questions in their area of sociology.
In addition, the AIP will mentor a group of 18-20 MA students over the MA year and serve as second reader on their MA theses; advise a limited number of MA theses as the primary supervisor; lead an MA Proposal Workshop; hire and manage teaching assistants; contribute to program admissions, staff hiring, and student recruitment; support applicants to doctoral programs; help train doctoral student preceptors, and contribute to the intellectual life and administrative needs of the program.
The position includes support for professional development.
Applicants must have a PhD in Sociology in hand prior to the start date. Teaching experience is required. Preferred qualifications include experience advising students with a broad range of interests in sociology, experience guiding students in individual research and writing projects, and a record of sociological scholarship.
