DIRECTOR OF BANDS
RANK/SALARY: Assistant/Associate Professor, tenure-track appointment. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
DUTIES: Responsibilities include: (1) conduct the University of Utah Wind Ensemble and administer and direct the University concert band program; (2) develop and maintain a national/international reputation as a wind ensemble conductor; (3) teach courses in conducting and music education; (4) coordinate and develop the graduate curriculum for Wind Conducting studies, including DMA and MM conducting and literature courses; (5) recruit instrumental undergraduate and graduate students; (6) in collaboration with applied faculty, music education faculty, and other ensemble directors, coordinate and guide recruitment efforts in the Winds and Percussion Teaching Areas; (7) perform administrative duties and serve on committees as assigned; (8) collaborate effectively with all faculty and administration to advance the mission of the School and the national prominence of the University of Utah and the School of Music.
QUALIFICATIONS: An earned doctorate in music, or an earned master in music with experience equivalent to a doctorate, is required; demonstrated achievement as a wind conductor at the university level including a substantial record of creative and/or scholarly achievement at the national and/or international level; demonstrated successful teaching, program leadership, and student recruiting; demonstrated collaboration with faculty colleagues; and demonstrated support and vision to expand the existing active relationship with public school band programs. The strongest candidates will recognize that music has strong potential for social change through engagement with underrepresented communities, and their work will reflect this.
