Faculty Associate / Full Professor of Radiation Oncology, Research Track for Medical Physics
The Department of Radiation Oncology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in the non-tenure research track. The successful applicant will be accomplished in the area of Radiation Oncology with a focus on Medical Physics, a skilled Principal Investigator with at least 8-10 years’ experience in translational research, demonstrated success developing and leading a cross-disciplinary research program, and a history of diverse and successful grant funding including NIH funding and clinical protocols. The ideal candidate should seek and establish multi-disciplinary research collaboration both inside and outside the department. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and have demonstrated excellent qualifications in education and research. ABR board certification in therapeutic radiological physics is preferred. Experience in proton therapy and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) is preferred.

The Radiation Oncology clinic, located in the newly constructed Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, includes five state-of-the-art Varian linacs, a Varian HDR unit installed alongside a Varian Acuity Simulator with CBCT capability, two Siemens Sensation wide bore 4DCT simulators, a Siemens wide bore Espree MRI unit and a Philips wide bore PET/wide bore CT unit. We provide a full range of radiation oncology services (IMRT, brachytherapy, TBI, SRS and SBRT) and have an active development program in all aspects of radiotherapy physics. We are also active in photodynamic therapy research. The Roberts Proton Therapy Center opened in the fall of 2009. It houses the largest proton therapy facility in the USA, comprising four gantry treatment rooms and one fixed beam room. This facility has several unique features including MLC’s for scattered and uniform scanned beams, pencil beam scanning and intensity modulate proton therapy, CBCT in the gantry rooms and fast beam switching. The University of Pennsylvania, Radiation Oncology Department also supports seven satellite facilities variously equipped with a total of seven linacs, a GammaKnife unit, CyberKnife and an HDR unit.
The Research Division of the Department of Radiation Oncology consists of approximately 11,630 square feet of research space in the new 523,000 SF state-of- the-art Smilow Center for Translational Research (SCTR) and 3,630 square feet of space in the John Morgan Building. This space consists of 2,933 square feet of lab space and 697 square feet of offices. Our new facilities in SCTR include ~6,800 square feet of lab space, including benches and dedicated rooms; ~1,085 square feet of equipment space; and ~1,650 square feet of office space. The department has a strong radiation biology research program. Ongoing efforts are aimed at developing treatments combining radiotherapy with immunotherapy, optimizing precision (personalized) Radiotherapy. The department has an advanced combined modality (proton and photon) small animal research room with strong physics support. The department is also active in photodynamic therapy research.
