The Department of Radiation Oncology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor position in the non-tenure research track. Expertise is required in the specific area of normal tissue damage response to radiation, animal model systems of radiation damage, interactions between the immune system and radiotherapy, new radiation modalities (e.g., Proton, FLASH radiation) and role of the tumor microenvironment on tumor response to radiation. We invite applications from outstanding individuals with strong scholarly productivity in basic and/or translational research ; Candidates should have strong scholarly credentials, a record of external research funding, and high impact publications. Applicants must have an M.D. or Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree. Applicants must have demonstrated excellent qualifications in education and research. A competitive startup package and laboratory space in the Smilow Building for Translational Research will be provided.
Research or scholarship responsibilities may include : the development of a rigorous and nationally competitive research program consistent with the goals of the Department and contribution to its educational mission.
Penn Radiation Oncology Department faculty are engaged in highly collaborative and translational research. Penn RadOnc faculty occupy currently contiguous space in the Smilow Center for Translational Research, adjacent to the clinic. A state-of-the-art radiation research facility with both photon and proton beam radiotherapy capabilities has been operational since 2017. Penn RadOnc is ranked in the top 3 Radiation Oncology Departments in NIH funding in the last 5 years, including 2 P01 grants. Additional funding comes from the Department of Defense, private foundations and industry. Areas of active research include: Interactions between radiation and immune system, understanding the mechanisms behind FLASH radiation sparing of normal tissues, impact of the microbiome on radiation response, the role of the tumor microenvironment (with emphasis on hypoxia and metabolic stress) on tumor progression and metastasis and translational regulation of gene expression.
