Director, Botswana-UPenn Partnership
The Center for Global Health at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania invites applications for the position of Director of the Botswana-UPenn Partnership (BUP). BUP’s overarching mission is to address inequities in health care in sub-Saharan Africa with the focused goal of improving the health of the residents of Botswana through partnerships in education, research and clinical care. The Director will lead and develop BUP in all aspects including strategic planning, operations, fiscal management and reporting, staff and faculty oversight and development. The Director will foster mutually beneficial bi-directional partnerships with local and international entities, develop extramural funding streams, and integrate these roles with the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) through the Center for Global Health.
The primary BUP goals are:
- Partner with the University of Botswana, the Botswana Ministry of Health, and other entities to
build health care and research capacity in Botswana - Support Penn and CHOP faculty to advance research on major communicable and non-
communicable disease burdens in Botswana and globally, and create linkages between
Penn/CHOP faculty and local research partners - Work with partners to assess and remediate gaps in health care implementation, quality and
effectiveness in Botswana and the region - Serve as a global training site for Penn and other academic institutions
- Emphasize local ownership and sustainability in all program activities
- Support program activities through robust sponsored research support and philanthropy
The University of Pennsylvania has worked in Botswana since 2001 through the Botswana-UPenn Partnership. To achieve its mission and goals BUP currently employs more than 140 full-time staff in country. Working closely with the University of Botswana and the Botswana Ministry of Health, BUP provides an interface to the numerous national and international entities that are engaged in global health. BUP supports the conduct of health care, education, and research undertaken by rotating and on-site Penn and CHOP faculty. BUP also oversees the on-site education of Penn clinical and research trainees as well as those from collaborating institutions. Proactive program development, relations, and funding, as well as daily oversight of BUP are primary responsibilities of the Director.
Applicants for the position of Director must have an MD (or equivalent); and/or PhD a distinguished record in biomedical and/or clinical research; a commitment to education and mentorship of students, fellows and faculty; experience leading organizations focused on global health; and possess dynamic leadership skills. The applicant must have the background and skills to enable strong collaborations among educators, clinicians and researchers in global health. The candidate should express a clear vision of the future of global health, and the role that the BUP can play as part of a renowned academic medical center. Candidates with working experience in Botswana and/or sub-Saharan Africa are strongly preferred. The candidate must be qualified for appointment as faculty (full or adjunct) in an appropriate department in the Perelman School of Medicine.
