Faculty Hospitalist Scholars Program
The Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for several Instructor positions in the Academic Support Staff. This appointment will be initially for one (1) year and continuation during that time period and renewal are based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding (limited to three (3) years). Applicants must have an M.D. or equivalent degree. Board certified/board eligible in general internal medicine is required.
Responsibilities may include nights and weekends at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, as well as limited shifts at Good Shepherd Penn Partners Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH). In addition to a competitive salary and generous benefits, Scholars are eligible to receive a loan repayment bonus at the end of each year of clinical service completed.
The successful applicant will have an opportunity to work with mentors within hospital medicine and the sub-specialty field of their choice and engage in scholarly projects intended to result in presentations at scientific meetings or peer-reviewed publications. In addition, scholars will gain experience, insight, and connections into the sub-specialty field of interest. Scholars will also participate in structured career development activities with junior faculty in Section of Hospital Medicine intended to create a solid foundation for independent practice of inpatient medicine.
The Instructor position in Hospital Medicine at Penn is a part of a unique career development program known as the Hospitalist Scholars Program which is designed specifically for new graduates of internal medicine residencies who would like to work 1-2 years as hospitalists before moving on to the next phase of their career – typically a sub-specialty fellowship. At least one letter of recommendation must specifically detail the candidate’s potential for success in their sub-specialty field of interest, and the remaining two must comment specifically about their clinical excellence (one of these should be from a residency program director, the other from a faculty member who supervised them on an inpatient rotation such as general internal medicine or intensive care unit).
