Faculty Assistant Professor of English (Technical Writing and Professional Communication)

The English Department at The University of Texas at Arlington invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor, with a specialization in Technical Writing and Professional Communication (TWPC), to start in the Spring 2020 semester. The teaching load will be two courses in Spring 2020 and 2/2 in AY 2020-21, with the expectation of remaining 2/2 annually thereafter based upon significant research productivity. The position also entails service, such as mentoring graduate students and/or participating on committees.

The successful applicant will be an active researcher who can contribute to our vibrant MA and PhD programs and to our emerging undergraduate program in TWPC, which includes a minor and a certificate and which offers face-to-face, online, and accelerated online courses. A PhD in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely allied field is required; strong preference will be given to a PhD in Technical Writing and Professional Communication or a closely allied field. Candidates must have their PhD by 1 September 2020; preference will be given to candidates who have or will have their PhD by 16 January 2020. Preference will be given to applicants with research interests, qualifications, and/or experience related to one or more of the following areas: content design and delivery (strategy, usability and user experience, digital design, translation); curriculum development; decolonial/cultural rhetorics, particularly Asian/Pacific American, Chicanx/Latinx, or Indigenous/Native American rhetorics; grant and proposal writing; internships and community partnerships; making/makerspaces; multilingualism and/or translingualism; research methods; rhetorics of science or healthcare; writing in the disciplines; and writing program administration. Strong preference will be given to applicants with experience teaching diverse student populations across disciplines.

  3. A statement of teaching philosophy, preferably not to exceed 500 words.
  4. A substantive writing sample (e.g., dissertation chapter, article/book chapter, webtext), preferably not to exceed 8,000 words.
  5. A teaching portfolio that includes (1) an undergraduate TWPC or TWPC-related syllabus and schedule of assignments and (2) examples of teaching effectiveness.
  6. Three letters of recommendation.
